People in Indian-controlled Kashmir are casting their ballots as the fourth phase of India’s parliamentary elections begins.
Voting is being held in the region for the first time since Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government stripped Kashmir of its semi-autonomous status in 2019.
Modi’s Hindu nationalist BJP party isn’t running any candidates in the area.
The decision to bring the Muslim-majority region under direct rule was deeply unpopular among residents – and some are choosing to boycott the vote.
Control of Kashmir is disputed between India and Pakistan, who have fought two wars over the territory. An ongoing decades-long separatist insurgency has left tens of thousands dead in Indian-controlled Kashmir.
