Two dozen world leaders gathered in Russia on Tuesday for the opening of a three-day summit of the BRICS group, an alliance of emerging economies that the Kremlin hopes will challenge Western “hegemony”. With the summit, the biggest such meeting in Russia since it ordered troops into Ukraine, President Vladimir Putin is seeking to show Western attempts to isolate Moscow over the two-and-a-half-year offensive have failed. XI JINPING RECALLS HISTORIC RUSSIA-CHINA TRADE ROUTE TO PUTIN AT BRICS SUMMIT “400 years ago, the Great Tea Road connecting our countries passed through Kazan [where the BRICS summit is taking place],” Xi said. “And it was through this route that Chinese Wuyishan tea was brought to Russia.” The Great Tea Road, also called the Siberian Route, was one of the major Chinese trades routes connecting the biggest Russian cities, including Moscow, with China. In 1915, China exported 70,000 tons of tea to Siberia, which accounted for 65 percent of the country’s tea exports.
