Cartel violence: Is Mexico’s security situation any different than usual? | DW News

A wave of violence in Mexico also affected resort towns which are popular with foreign tourists. The unrest followed the government’s killing of the leader of a major drug cartel, as part of Mexico’s decades-old struggle to rein in narcotics violence.

With her country set to co-host the football World Cup this year, Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum is insisting that it is safe for tourists and football fans to visit. But some in the tourism industry fear the latest flare-up in violence could have a lasting impact.
