US Supreme Court considers birthright citizenship | BBC News

President Donald Trump made an unexpected appearance as the US Supreme Court heard a landmark case on whether children born in the country have a constitutional birthright to citizenship.

The case followed from an executive order signed by Trump seeking to end automatic citizenship for some babies born in the US to parents in the country illegally or temporarily.

Opponents have argued the move violates the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution, which guarantees citizenship to anyone born on American soil.

Supporters have said the change is needed to address national security concerns and curb illegal immigration.
