A critically endangered Mediterranean monk seal surprised boaters in Bodrum, Türkiye, on June 4 by climbing onto the swim platform of an anchored yacht to sunbathe. After resting for a while, the seal returned to the Aegean Sea and swam away.
The Mediterranean monk seal is considered the rarest seal species, with a global population estimated at around 600 to 700 individuals, including 350 to 450 mature individuals.
