Nepal imposes curfew as communal tensions escalate into deadly clashes

Authorities in Nepal’s Siraha district imposed an indefinite curfew on July 30 after escalating tensions led to protests and deadly clashes. Protesters obstructed roads with burning tyres and set fire to buildings and vehicles.

Clashes began in Diwanganj in neighbouring Sunsari district over a dispute involving loud music during a Hindu event. Clashes escalated with Hindutva mobs attacking Muslim-owned businesses and forcing Muslim residents to recite Hindu-nationalist chants, while vehicles, government offices and police posts were set on fire.
