Calls for more help for gambling addicts as demand for NHS clinics soar

The NHS has opened a new gambling addition clinic in Sheffield – the fifteenth of its kind in England – amid a significant increase in demand for the services they offer. This marks a doubling of such clinics in the last year, but the CEO of NHS England, Amanda Pritchard, has warned that more help is needed beyond the health service – including within the gambling industry itself. Recent figures show that, between 2022 and 2023, there were 1,389 referrals to NHS gambling clinics in England – a 79% rise on two years earlier. Anyone feeling emotionally distressed or suicidal can call Samaritans for help on 116 123 or email jo@samaritans.org in the UK. In the US, call the Samaritans branch in your area or 1 (800) 273-TALK
