Greece, EU criticise North Macedonia president over name issue

North Macedonia’s newly elected president, Gordana Siljanovska Davkova, was sworn into office on Sunday and immediately reignited a diplomatic spat with Greece. During the ceremony, she referred to her country as Macedonia rather than by its constitutional name – North Macedonia. This prompted Greece’s ambassador to Skopje to leave the inauguration. Davkova’s office said she has the right to use the name Macedonia as an act of self-determination. The decades-long dispute between the two neighbours was resolved in 2018 with the signing of the historic Prespa agreement. Since then, Macedonia has been known as the Republic of North Macedonia.

Across The Balkans, hosted by Nafisa Latic, is TRT World’s programme that focuses specifically on the issues and fault lines shaping Southeast Europe today.
