US lawmakers approved a new spending bill to avoid a government shutdown. The Senate abandoned normal procedure to fast-track a vote minutes after the midnight deadline. Both Republican and Democratic lawmakers supported the new plan.
It includes billions of dollars for disaster relief, farmers and funding the U.S. government through mid-March next year. However, it did not include a condition that President-elect Donald Trump had demanded, a change in the debt limit – to allow the government to take on new debt. The White House says President Joe Biden will sign the plan into law.
