M23 rebels, reportedly backed by about 4,000 troops from neighbouring Rwanda, enter eastern Democratic Republic of Congo’s second-largest city of Bukavu, residents say. This marks the latest ground gained since a major escalation in their yearslong conflict with government forces.
Hours earlier, the rebels claimed to have seized a second airport in the region, located in the town of Kavumu, following a days-long advance.
