At least 71 killed in Israeli air strike on Tehran’s Evin Prison

Iranian authorities said an Israeli air strike hit Tehran’s Evin Prison on June 17, killing at least 71 people during the 12-day conflict between the two countries.

The victims included prison staff, guards, detainees, visiting relatives and civilians living near the site.

The notorious Evin Prison in northern Tehran is a facility infamous for holding political prisoners, journalists, activists and foreign nationals. The strike reportedly destroyed parts of the administrative building, the medical centre and the visitation area.

The judiciary released images showing collapsed ceilings, scattered debris and damaged walls, describing the attack as part of Israel’s broader bombardment campaign launched on June 13.

Following the strike, Iranian officials said inmates were transferred out, but did not disclose how many or where they were taken.
