Migration has become a dominant political issue in many countries. In developed economies in particular, opposition to immigration – particularly irregular migration – has fuelled support for some political movements. Yet there is extensive evidence that migration is vital for developed economies, brings major benefits and will be essential as societies age. But are there also economic costs?
