“I’m getting tired of getting outraged”
Jagan Chapagain, head of the Red Cross and Red Crescent, says 2026 is once again on track to become the worst year for humanitarian workers.
Chapagain says his organisation has already lost 21 aid workers this year, mainly in Iran, Lebanon, Gaza, the DRC and Sudan. Some of them were wearing the Red Crescent emblem and were in clearly marked vehicles.
“(In Lebanon), one of the things the emergency medical services staff do in the morning when they get dispatched to their work, they hug each other and say goodbye because they don’t know whether they’ll come back alive or not,” Chapagain said.
“It’s extremely important that the governments and the world leaders who are here at the UN General Assembly redouble their efforts to ensure that the humanitarian workers are protected,” Chapagain added
