French police launched full-force baton charges followed by heavy volleys of tear gas against high school student demonstrators in Paris’s Bastille Square on October 8, as tensions remained high amid ongoing student protests across the country. Human rights organisations have accused French authorities of using disproportionate force against protesters, many of whom are minors and high school students. A 15-year-old student lost his hand when a stun grenade exploded, a 16-year-old student was permanently blinded in one eye, and a police officer was formally charged after a young protester near Paris suffered a double jaw fracture from being struck by a police projectile. More than 6,600 people — overwhelmingly under the age of 18 — have been arrested or detained since the unrest began.
