‘US can’t politically engineer a new status quo inside Iran, it must be self-sustaining’

Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Oman led a last-minute diplomatic effort to dissuade U.S. President Donald Trump from launching a high-risk military strike on Iran, fearing grave blowbacks across an already volatile region. For in-depth analysis, Gene Godula welcomes Jon Hoffman, Research Fellow in Defence and Foreign Policy at the Cato Institute. Mr. Hoffman describes Iran as “a brutal dictatorship, involved in a host of malign activities across the region,” yet warns that US military intervention would be both “incredibly risky,” would likely provoke retaliation and entangle the US in a prolonged campaign. It could also cause irreversible harm to Iran’s nascent grassroots movement. “The US cannot politically engineer or enforce a new status quo inside Iran, it has to be self-sustaining and can’t be externally imposed,” he explains.
